A Tip to insert Flash Movies into PowerPoint slides

MS PowerPoint is a powerful and attractive tool to express your ideas to others. You can convey these ideas in more effective ways, if you are using movie files with your simple slides. The Flash movies are normally the best choice to add into PowerPoint due to its small file size.

Follow the given steps to insert the Flash Movies into PowerPoint Slides:

Make sure before inserting the Flash Movies into PowerPoint slides that you have installed the Flash Player on your computer.

First of all open the presentation in which you want to insert Flash movie file.

Now click on "Toolbar" option from the "View" menu and choose the option "Control Toolbox".


Here a small floating menu will appear with the title "Control Toolbox".

Using "Control Toolbox" toolbar, click on the icon that looks like hammer for more controls and scrolling the objects then choose the object "Shockwave Flash Object".


Now using your mouse pointer, draw the box size and position where you want to play a flash movie.

Now right click on box and select the "Properties" option.


A small properties dialog box will appear with different options.

Under the Alphabetic tab, click the option "Movie" and type the full file path of flash movie in blank cell next to Movie (for example d:\flash_file).

Again under same tab, set the property "True" for "Playing" and "EmbedMovie" objects to add and play the flash file automatically with slide. Here you can also set the Quality, Width, Scale and Windows Mode objects for flash file.

Finally close the "Properties" dialog box. Save your PowerPoint presentation and run it for test.

The workshop is intended for Engineering students who will have completed at least 6 semesters of undergraduate curriculum (strictly before 1st June 2009). Exceptional students who will have completed only 4 semesters may also be considered. Masters students are also encouraged to apply. The workshop is scheduled to be held from 1 June 2009 to 15 July 2009.

The selection of the students for this workshop will be on a competitive basis and preference will be given to students interested in pursuing a Masters or PhD program in a related area. This workshop will be intensive in nature and will involve lectures, laboratory assignments, and finally the students are expected to complete design projects. Some stipend may be available to selected candidates in the graphics/vision area.

Disabling Autorun for Stopping Pen Drive Viruses

Viruses spread from computers to computers by targetting the main epidemic source of the Pen Drive’s Autorun in mainly XP and later windows based systems. Antiviruses help but there are numerous viruses created and spreaded worldwide before your AntiVirus company can even prepare an update. So the Circumtances tell us that Disabling the autorun feature is always the better option and Heres the steps:

1. Start -> Run -> gpedit.msc and then OK.


2. Look Right then go to Computer Configuration-> Administrative Templates -> System
3. Scroll Down and double click on “Turn off Autoplay”.



4. Enable It and select “Turn off Autoplay on: All Drives” and the Autorun will be disabled.

But you are not secured yet, dont double click or select one of the Right-Click menu options in the pen drive’s icon, they are hacked and may activate the virus. Instead, after Opening “My Computer” click on the “Folders” on the bar at the top and click on the drive that appears on the left hand side or else you right click on the pendrive and click/select explore instead of autorun and open. Then do whatever you want.

Step 1: Make sure the network cable is connected

1. Click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then click OK.
2. Right-click the Local Area Connection icon. Click Enable if the option is available.

4. Click Uninstall, and then click OK. In the dialog box that prompts you to remove the files that are associated with this device, click Yes.
5. Restart the computer. Or, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
6. If Windows finds the device but does not recognize it, you must install the latest driver for your network adapter.

Step 5: Create a new DSL or cable connection

Warning Programs that access or monitor the Internet, such as antivirus, firewall, or proxy clients, may be negatively affected when you run the netsh winsock reset command. If you have a program that no longer functions correctly after you use this resolution, reinstall the program to restore functionality.


Step 7: Temporarily uninstall third-party firewalls
Some third-party firewall software such as ZoneAlarm and Norton Personal Firewall may cause Internet connectivity issues on computers that are running Windows XP SP2. You may have to temporarily uninstall these programs to test the computer. Disabling these programs may not be sufficient for testing. Make sure that you have the CD or the installation files so that you can reinstall the programs later. If these programs are causing the problem, you may have to contact the program vendor if you need help with the settings for that program.

Note You may want to verify that the Windows XP firewall is enabled before you remove the third-party firewall program.

Step 8: Scan for and remove spyware and adware
We recommend that you install Microsoft Windows Defender. To obtain Windows Defender or to obtain additional information about tools that you can use to remove unwanted software from your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Step 9: Clear the temporary Internet files

1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

Important tweaks:

Tweaking the CMOS
This is one of the most sensitive parts of your computer. By changing setting here, you can gain very significant speed increases.
Step 1: Disable Bootup Floppy seek
Step 2: Enable CPU Internal cache
Step 3: Enable Video BIOS Shadow
Step 4: Enable System BIOS Cacheable
Step 5: Enable video BIOS cacheable
Step 6: Enable passive release
Step 7: Enable delayed transaction

• These are socket 370 based Intel processors.
• If your older board has such a socket you can easily upgrade
• If it does not support he Coppermine processor, you’ll have to upgrade th motherboard itself to a higher level

• This is especially true of programs that require and use a lot or RAM

• It improves the sped and performance of the system
• The hard disk essentially stores files
• Too much operation does not lend it to high quality performance

• Besides newer hard disks are faster by definition


Maintaining your PC for optimal performance

• Grounding one’s PC is very significant in fact it has to be done before anything else is done

Rectification of "USB Pen Drive not opening" problem

It usually happens when your antivirus removes the viruses but references are left to autorun files created by virus and hence when try to open, it shows OPEN with dialog box and "always use this application" box is grayed out.

If content of flash drive is not important then you can format it .

simply open my computer and in address bar type drive letter of your drive, say its M:

Goto Run --> type "cmd" then you will get command line,
now type :

Here M: is your PEN drive letter,

After this try to open your drive normally.

Many of the persons would face the problem of "write protected" in a pen drive.that is when a person wants o write,copy from the pendrive or format the pendrive then he/she would get the msg such as "write protected" which depicts that one can do none with that pendrive.But now a powerful tool has been there to violoate that bluddy problem.

How to set specified folder view to all Folder Views in windows XP and Vista?

This tip will help you to manage the specified view of all folders in windows XP and Vista. By default, you have options to choose the view of folders contents as thumbnails, titles, icons, list or display with details. But this change will apply on the folders that you are currently working in. On the other hand, with the just few more clicks, you can change the view of all the folders on your computer.

Follow the given steps to accomplish this task through the Folder Options dialog box.

First of all open any folder, click "View" and choose the view you would most like to use.

Now from the Tools menu, click on Folder Options" to open the Folder Options dialog box.

Here on Folder Options dialog box, select the View tab.

At the top of the dialog box, click Apply to all folders button.



Now a new confirmation message will appear as "Set all the folders on your computer to match the current folders view settings (except for toolbars and folder task)? Change will occur the next time you open them."



Click OK in the Folder Options window to save the changes.
Now all the folders on your computer should display contents in your chosen view. As before, you can still change the view in individual folders via the "View" button.

Spring Fest 09,A Techfest at IIT - KGP, 22-25 Jan, 2009

SPRING FEST is held every year on the weekend closest to Republic day, 26th January. It is a three day long inter-college social and cultural festival. Colleges are invited from all over the country and a large number of people arrive in Kharagpur for this enjoyable event.

Spring Fest is organised by the Technology Students Gymkhana. For its smooth running, a bunch of committees are set up which are headed by a steering committee. The various committees are involved in diverse issues such as reception, transportation, food, accomodation, decoration and then finally the committees involved with the events themselves. The events include dramatics, western and eastern music (solo/group, instrumental/vocal), Just A Minute, Perpendiculars, professional performances, dramatics & literary events etc.

BSNL BROADBAND ERROR NO: 691

REMEDY: This ERROR is caused due to the username and password used by you. To overcome this call to 12678 and inform them about the problem by using your INTERNET SECTION NUMBER. thats all you can get rid of the problem.

BSNL BROADBAND ERROR NO: 769

REMEDY:This is caused due to the disabling of LAN CONNECTION in your COMPUTER/SYSTEM.To overcome this problem follow the below steps:
Goto DESKTOP-->START MENU-->CONNECT T-->SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS-->RIGHT CLICK ON LAN and select ENABLE. Thats all the problem will be solved.

BSNL BROADBAND ERROR NO: 797

REMEDY: This ERROR is being caused due to the LAN DRIVERS or the MODEM. To overcome this you once SWITCH OFF the MODEM’S (ON condition) RESET BUTTON and wait for two minutes and try again to connect. Even then if the problem is not yet solved then call your Computer Mechanic and make him check your LAN DRIVERS.

REMEDY: This is caused due to the Corruptness of PPPOE SOFTWARE or if the broadband users at a time try to access the INTERNET beyond the system’s capacity. Then try to connect to INTERNET after some time even if it is not solved then consult your respective Junior Engineer(J.E) and make him load the respective SOTWARE and get rid of the problem.
