     How to study ?

I will tell you three golden words . Read the subject by posing questions " What " , " How " and " Why "  ( In telugu we say " enduku " , " emiti " , " ela " ) . And another word is always stress to analyze the things by working out on the paper and don't take anything for granted , then things would be fine for you and life will be smooth . I promise you that these words are very powerful .

  *    I tell you  these Brilliant tutorial materials and all will not help you . follow standard textbooks , read the concepts , understand them , think about how they would be useful and can be applied practically ( what , how , why ) . Try to work out the exercise problems given at the back of each chapter in the textbook ( once again not all , only those which you feel like useful for your preparation , there is no point in wasting your time over 3 starred problems ) . Read two different subjects in parallel so that you wont feel bored .  Try to answer the questions related to a subject after you finish studying it from both " Multiple choice questions " book by williams and questions from all the previous papers related to that subject . This would give you some insight on the GATE questions and build your confidence as well .

** Another thing is that don't worry whether i can do well in GATE as my percentage in university exams is very less , for people who think like that let me clarify  your university percentage has nothing to do with GATE both of them are entirely different ball games all together . The student with good basics , understanding , application will definitely succeed irrespective of the percentage . one more thing is , don't worry even if it was too late to start the preparation for one reason or the other , i tell you 2 months is more than enough for the preparation of the CS paper even if you have not studied much for your university exams .

*** One important note to the undergraduates , see you believe it or not these 4 years of your B.Tech are the best days of your entire life so enjoy them to the fullest , bunking the classes and going to movies , roaming with  friends , going to second show movies , playing cricket , getting ragged by the seniors and ragging your juniors etc ... . Studies is only part of life , it is not everything in life , there are many more beautiful things in life so , don't miss them ( you cannot reuse time unlike space right )

Always set the password using maximum characters length, because it is simple method, if your password is longer then it is very difficult to guess.

Use the combination of lower-case and upper case letters in your password.

Normally computer users use the lower case in password selection but it is best practice to use the combination of both (lower-case and upper case). So using different cases in your password makes it much more difficult to crack.

Use the combination of letters and numbers in your password.

When you mix both letters and numbers just like one letter and one number then your password is more incomprehensible.

Avoid using the name of your family members as password.

Always try to avoid the name of your child, spouse, city and country name as password, because if any body knows about your personal life’s details then they try to use these detail to guess your password.

Use any tools to create random password.

There are many third party tools are available to create the random password. You can create passwords containing a very difficult –to-guess collection of random characters with these tools.

How to eliminate the needless visual effects for better windows performance?

By default windows XP gives you many options in the graphics fields to enjoy maximum graphics. For example, you can add pictures on folders and drop shadow on icon to give you better look but it will effect on the performance of your computer, especially on an older computer. Window XP has many default graphics which is not so useful for a common user, if you re-adjust these graphics then there is less effect on the user activities but the performance of computer will be increase tremendously. Turns off all the visual effects in the option of "Adjust for best performance" and when you select the option "Adjust for best appearance" it will gives you opposite effect ,Everything will turns on. Selecting "Let Windows choose what's best for my computer" triggers, as you might guess, different choices on different computers. And to pick and choose individual effects yourself, choose "custom" then decide which ones you want.

Firefox 3.1 to Include Private Browsing Mode Finally

Privacy mode is not a new dish but has become a important part of diet for browsers. It has been existence since a long time in Safari, then finally being adopted by others. Few days ago Microsoft announced InPrivate mode for Internet Explorer 8, then Google Chrome introduced Incognito Mode and finally now its the turn of Mozilla Firefox.
Till now this feature lacked in Firefox but again a plugin named as Close’n Forget came to the rescue. The plugin just does the work what its name claims. You browse your private session without any worries, and just close the browser. No history, bookmarks, cookies or passwords will be saved. But what if it gets inbuilt in the Firefox? It will be available on any computer having Firefox without the need of installing a special plugin for it.

After Firefox, the only one left without the Private Mode is Opera. Opera is surely a nice, simple and fast browser but it needs this feature to compete with others. Private Mode has become a necessity for browsers as other features like Tab Browsing, Popup Blocker, etc.

The uses of this feature are endless, some of them are: If you need to do online shopping, or would like to browse anonymously or most popularly its known as porn mode as its most used for visiting porn sites.

Mozilla got very late in getting this but finally we will not need another browser or plugin for Private Browsing. However it was also expected with Firefox 3.0 but Mozilla didn’t felt the need that time. Finally when Google attacked with Chrome, Firefox is felt the heat of competition and thus now it just does not want to leave any loop whole.

Ctrl-Tab brings Alt-Tab Switching to Firefox

We all are familiar with Alt-Tab and Win-Tab Functionality in Windows and we surely so use it hundreds of times in a day (atleast a geek does). What if we had similar functionality in Firefox. But unluckily this thing didn’t stuck Mozilla guys. But remember the Firefox plugin’s (the soul of Firefox) let a third party developer, Dao Gottwald develop this functionality in Firefox.
As the name says this plugin uses the Ctrl-Key for its operation instead of Alt or Win Key. It has same feeling as of switching in windows but the difference here is it switches Firefox Tabs rather than the windows.

It not only sports Ctrl+Tab functionality but also it has cool Tab Preview function which displays the previews of currently open tabs in a neat searchable way. The best thing about Tab Preview is the search. It consist of a search which is very similar to Firefox search for web pages but what it does is filters the tab previews. It get very handy if you are running a big number of tabs simultaneously.

The extension still needs lot of improvement. After running the Tab Preview function, I saw some blackening spots in browser. Also its shortcut for Tab Preview (Ctrl+Shift+A) collides with All-in-one-sidebar add-on’s window shortcut. You will have to change the shortcut for all-in-one-sidebar add-on’s though a new shortcut for Tab Preview has been introduced in the current release of this plugin. The new shortcut is (Ctrl+Q), sweet and simple.

Download Ctrl-Tab Firefox Plugin.

First Ever Interactive Game on Youtube

Youtube launched video annotations on Youtube some days ago but here is the first interactive game on Youtube. Hexolabs created a simple car game using annotation which makes you jump to the next level or you can say that you are taken to the next level’s video in a new page.

The game is of total 9 videos containing 8 levels. The first video starts and a “Click” button appears at random places for a very short duration in the videos. Clicking the button takes you to the next video or the next level. So all you have to do is quickly click on the link before it disappears otherwise you will loose the game.

If you fail to click the button in time, you can quickly resume the game by just rewinding the video. I don’t think that any more cheat codes are needed for this game.

Visit the link below or start your game from right here:

You can also start playing from this link on Youtube. Have Fun!

Ultimate Collection of Portable Apps [Screenshots]

PortableApps.com surely provides a good package which includes free apps that lets you take your apps with you, and provides the freedom of working at any computer. The collection of apps in standard suite of portable apps is nice but I was hungry for more apps that I use daily but the hard job was to find (or make) them portable.

So finally after two days of Googling and coding, my new Kingston pen drive is ready with the ultimate collection of Portable Apps ever. I have added more than a dozen of extra apps to PortableApps Suite and the result is what, you will be watching below.

So get ready to be tempted, and watch out the ultimate collection portable applications ever seen on a pen-drive.

The applications are completely portable and provides me comfort to work from just any PC. All the applications are either open source (free) or the trial versions. I have also purchased some licenses and converted few of them into PRO (registered) one’s.

The pictures above say that all these apps consumed 1.5 GB nearly but actually while taking screenshots some songs of around 500Mb were in the drive. Summarizing all these apps consumed nearly 1GB of the disk space.

I don’t think, the list and my hunger will end here. There are lots more applications waiting to be converted for portable use. So are you tempting to steal my pen drive?

Sync files between computers, servers, mobile devices easily

There have been a lot of cases where we need to sync or copy files from one computer to another, or between your desktop and laptop, or between your web server and the pen drives. Doing them manually is possible but is quite time consuming and stone breaking difficult. Thus syncing software is required for performing these kind of jobs.

Simple example of its usage is – Suppose you have a smart phone or a digital camera. You have copied the pictures today but you have not deleted them from the phone. The next day you capture more pictures and again you have to copy the pictures to the computer. You may delete the complete folder which you copied yesterday and then copy all the images again from phone or camera. But what if the the folder which you deleted contains images that are no more in your device.

Merging the files from both sources will be a headache, here is where syncing software comes in role. It automatically merges & syncs the files between the two sources. The operation can be either be two way sync or one way.

GoodSync is the most popular syncing application available in the market. It proves syncing of files between any two folders whether they are on server, pen drive, mobile, digital camera or you different computer. It just does it all. It provides you with various options like 2-way sync, 1-way sync, scheduled sync, etc.

GoodSync is available as free trial version and a pro version. The trial version has limitations to sync and the pro version can be purchased for ~30$ USD. But this software is worth the amount you pay.

Another options other than GoodSync are Allway Sync & OpenSync. Allway Sync also does the same job as GoodSync but it is less comfortable than GoodSync and does not support remote servers over FTP as GoodSync does. The price of Allway Sync is also same as of GoodSync.

OpenSync is an open source free software which is still in alpha stage of early development. It has the support for plugins but still if you are professional user and want to sync important data, this software is not recommended. OpenSync is available for free but it lacks many features and crashes unusually.

There are even more in market, just search for “file syncing software” on any search engine and you will find them.

Sony Ericsson to Come out with BioDegradable Phone

Sony Ericsson plans to make the world a much more greener place by coming out with its Eco Friendly phone. Currently, mobile phones are not bio degradable and contains substances which may harm the environment if not disposed off properly.

The new “Greenheart” concept aims at making phones from bio degradable substances like bio-plastic, recycled keypads, digital manual to reduce paper waster and eco friendly packing. The charger will also be zero waste, meaning there will be no power loss when the charger is still plugged in main but disconnected from device. If you look at the images of the phone, they don’t look too attractive but it certainly has the Eco factor.

Last month Samsung also announced a phone whose entire case was made from Bio-plastic. Sony Ericsson will also setup collection points where users can deposit there phone for recycle.

YouTube’s New Web Based Video Uploader

YouTube has a got a new web-based Video uploader. The new uploader is capable of uploading 10 files at a time. Each file can be of up to 1GB in size. This update was seen to be necessary as YouTube’s competitors already have larger uploading limits.

Previously, the limit on web based uploader was that you were only able to upload files less than 10mb in size. Also the files were not allowed to be more than 10 minute long. It isn’t still sure about this 10 minute limit has been raised or not in the new uploader.
The new uploader is still in beta stage and supports many video formats. The other alternative for uploading large video files were the desktop based video uploader’s, which can be used an alternative to this.

Recover deleted files

How many times have you deleted a file, emptied the Recycle Bin, and then had that sinking feeling in your gut. You need one of those files. Or maybe you just had a hard-disk crash, and suddenly all the files have disappeared.

I'll tell you how to recover your files, and show you how to do it, in this video.

For this example, I'm going to use a USB drive. But the same thing applies to most data drives. If your disk is still readable by the computer, you can recover all kinds of cool stuff.

See when you delete data it's not actually wiped off the disk. When a file is written to the disk, its location is noted. So the system knows where to go to read that file--kind of like a book index.

When you delete a file, the system removes the entry in the table. The file appears to be gone. This is akin to me blacking out or even tearing out the entry in the book's index.

The file itself stays on the machine, though. Just like Page 9 is still in the book even if I rip out the index page that refers to Page 9. But don't forget the computer thinks that location was empty. So if another file was written to that area, you may only recover part of a file.

Regardless of how your lost file was deleted, if you haven't performed many--if any--operations on the disk, you have a good chance of recovering it.

I'm going to use PhotoRec from cgsecurity.org, a free and open-source program, in my example. There are a lot of other programs to choose from, such as PC Inspector File Recovery.

Let's say I have a few MP3s on a USB drive, then I accidentally delete them.

No worries.

Just launch PhotoRec. Your USB thumbdrive should show up. Select it and make sure "proceed" is highlighted then press "enter."

Then you need to tell PhotoRec what kind of file system the machine uses. If it's Windows NTFS or FAT32, choose Intel. If you formatted the disk from a Mac choose "EFI" for Intel Macs and "Mac" for G4s or older.

If the disk has more than one partition, you'll need to choose which one to scan. Otherwise, choose the only partition available and make sure search is selected.

Then tell it what file system was used. FAT/NTFs/HFS for Windows and OS X, and EXT for Linux systems.

Next, you can tell it to look only at the unused space, which is faster, or if you're obsessive, choose to extract files from the whole partition.

Finally, tell the program where to store the files. It will suggest a folder based on where PhotoRec is running from. Just don't choose the drive you're scanning as the location. Then press "Y" and let it do its work.

Once it's done, look in the folder you specified earlier. You may have a lot of little pieces of files but you should also have some of the files you thought lost. If you're lucky, you may have all of them.
